Coyote Ridge Spring Flowers
The serpentine soil at Coyote Ridge Open Space discourages nonnative grasses and provides a profusion of native wildflowers.

Oh boy a Bay Checkerspot!
The Bay Checkerspot butterfly is endangered and lives in only a few small areas. If you see one, this is how the group looks. Butterfly is just below the left person's hand.

Butterfly on grass
The guy from the previous photo. Small. Easily spooked. Getting one on a good perch and from a good angle is tough. This is how a lot of my Bay Checkerspot photos look.

Goldfield flowers aren't very tall.
We were lucky--the butterflies were everywhere! Feeding on the goldfields, just about their only food. You can see the height of the goldfields (short yellow flowers).

Bay Checkerspot first look/shot
And finally this one landed right in front of me, posing and backlit and on a good perch! This is my first shot. I crept slowly forward, taking shots with each inch gained.

Bay Checkerspot final shot before he left
This was my final shot of him. I had to get low--he's beautifully backlit by the bright filtered light! Hoping he's in focus!
Post-process, crop in: Bay Checkerspot on Goldfield, Best in Class Nature
Then I did a few tweaks and cropped in, and here he is. Canon 7D with Canon 18-135mm lens at 135mm, f/10, 1/800, ISO 800. Earned a ribbon from my photo club.
