elf1 > See, the ROV contains only the basic, generic stuff that's useful for navigation and that's applicable to any mission. They swap different sleds in and out depending on the kind of work that they're doing with the ROV. This photo of a photo shows what the ROV looks like when attached to its sled.
elf1 > The big feature of the Western Flyer is its moon room (did I get that right? It was way back yesterday, remember--). They hook up the ROV (more later) to the huge crane and drop it (gently) down through this hole in the middle of the boat. Most boats don't LIKE having holes in the middle of their bottomward parts.
elf1 > There were lots of displays with cool, large-scale printouts with color photos and detailed explanations, plus hands-on equipment like this microscope and plenty of experts who were eager to talk about what they were doing. Couldn't really take photos of the video presentation--the most interesting? The "spook fish", like something from another world (I guess it is, really)--its head is transparent, and its bright green eyeballs are INSIDE the head and pointed eternally upwards. Wish I could find a photo of that particular species--it's VERY weird, but apparently never before (or rarely) photographed.
elf1 > Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Patterson fire still burns behind Mount Hamilton (to the left with the observatory). (News - more news - ) It's getting closer all the time to Henry Coe state park--see my two photo galleries from our hike there earlier this year.
elf1 > MBARI front entrance.
elf1 > MBARI, related to Monterey Bay Aquarium primarily in that they were both founded and funded largely by David Packard, occupies two huge new buildings overlooking the harbor.
elf1 > In the harbor on the way out, just more boats waiting silently.
