elf1  > Nature > Edgewood Park Wildflowers March 28 2009
Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve in San Mateo county provides a wealth of California native flowers and grasses in a serpentine environment. The weather March 28 proved perfect for getting out and about, so a friend and I took a 2-mile round trip stroll, shooting just about every flower we saw for 3 hours. My dissapointment: Instead of experimenting with a new lens set-up at home, I decided to do it here. I added a doubler to my 100-300mm telephoto. Turns out that the doubler doesn't seem to understand autofocus, so everything was manual focus--on a very long lens--with my hands a bit shaky--and no tripod. EVERYTHING turned out "soft" (a polite way of saying "blurry"). But still, most are at least identifiable, and I enjoyed the day and the flowers anyway. More resources for wildflowers: Calflora, Calphotos, and Steph's photos from the same hike.

elf1 > Most likely Trifolium_hirtum (Rose Clover), looking at Calflora site and calphoto photos. An invasive nonnative. But pretty anyway.
elf1 > We strolled up the Clarkia Trail, which has been adopted by the Horsemen's Association.
elf1 > Hey--The Horsemen get to take their big giant pets on these trails but I can't bring my little teeny (by comparison) dog pets? Huh.
elf1 > Camissonia_ovata( Sun Cup) probably, also looking at Cal Flora. (Steph labeled "Coast Sun Cup", which is same thing.) Native flower.
elf1 > Lupines were everywhere. Huge fields of lupines. I took lots of lupine photos and must therefore show you at least several of them. Native flower.
elf1 > Yes--lupines. Native flowers.
elf1 > Here's a Horseman, maintaining the Clarkia Trail, which they've adopted. A bunch of folks mostly in our range, hauling wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of stones and gravel up a huge steep hill to fix some erosional bits. Our pathetic wimpy backs applauded them.
elf1 > Eh.... Lupines! Native flower.
