elf1  > Vacation > Havasu Falls Grand Canyon May 2008 > Day 1B San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery May 2008
(#3 on the map.) I've often passed the sign pointing up route 33 towards Santa Nella and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. But this is not an important stop for motivation on the way to dog agility events. This time I wanted to see it. Turns out that it's in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, which is very way out in the middle of nowhere. It's quite peaceful. Just the place to put an expansive lawn and reflecting pools: the middle of a semidesert. But at least it's near a reservoir.

elf1 > The only building on the site houses a museum and the usual cemetery facilities. We didn't look for the museum. The bunch grasses along the slope in front of the building also exuded calm.
elf1 > My main goal was to see the California Korean War Veterans Memorial, and we found it here, surrounded by roses, some of which were still in bloom.

elf1 > You could tell that these were Californians who gave their lives; the engraved lists were flush with names like Hernandez, Fernandez, Sanchez--
elf1 > --although "Mc" and "Mac" names also filled two rows, which I thought was interesting.
elf1 > From a greater distance, you can see how the memorial is formed of concentric circles of marble, walkway, roses, bedding area, and so on.
On a hot day, the water and flowers are also calming and cooling.
