elf1  > Hiking > Blossom Hill Area Hike To Mall May 10 2008
After the other week, where the Sierra Club went for a really brisk "hike" of 5 miles, all on paved walkways in the suburbs of Palo Alto, with some folks snapping photos left and right, I thought--hey--let's take a new view of my own neighborhood as a Hiking Destination! But when? Saturday morning I agreed to meet my sister and bro-in-law at the mall to see Iron Man. I always drive because it's a LONG way over there--gosh, at least 5 minutes, or maybe less! But then, Saturday was gorgeous, and I realized that hiking 1.8 miles each way to the mall was a whole lot less walking than I've been doing Wednesdays with the Sierra Club. So, what the heck! Have camera, will hike. So off I went. (My photographic goal today was: No cropping or lighting fixes or realignment required in Photoshop after I got home. This was all done with my cheapie point-and-click digital camera. I did end up cropping two or three but mostly it helps if you actually pay attention to what you're doing!)

elf1 > It's an absolutely perfectly gorgeous Saturday, no clouds, no rain, not too hot, not too cold, flowers are in bloom! So everyone is at the mall!
elf1 > You know that you're in California: Palm trees plus freeway overpasses.
elf1 > Am I that tall yet?
elf1 > This car doing 38 (according to the light-up sign) didn't realize it was a 25-MPH zone. There was no info to that effect.
elf1 > I don't know what this feline had locked her gaze upon, but she didn't twitch the whole time I stood there and snapped photos.
elf1 > When I first moved here, this was a lovely park with huge grassy expanses that no one ever used and I could come here at any time and play frisbee with my dogs and there was never anyone here. Then they added a baseball diamond and a playground and picnic tables and pesky stuff like that, and now people use the park all the time, and it's hard to sneak in for a quick frisb (not even a full frisbee). What a waste of a perfectly good empty grassy park!
elf1 > The playground has all kinds of really cool stuff that I'd have loved to play on when I was a kid. Now, sometimes, I go through the motions, but it's not quite the same.
elf1 > But, in case I don't want to have to make that pesky drive out to the genuine hot, dusty, remote Arches National Park, you've got one here that's just like the real thing but in a convenient playground-tyke size, with a handy-dandy curly slide just beyond. Let's see the NPS match THAT!
