Day 7 Grand Canyon, California Condors : On our final morning at the Grand Canyon South Rim, we had a quick breakfast and moseyed over to the village to see whether we could see the Canyon. We could. Mostly it wasn't snowing. We moseyed through some of the stores and notable buildings, getting some shopping done, and while Linda continued perusing the content of Lookout Studio, I moseyed out to the terraces overlooking the canyon, and to my delight discovered that the area was filled with California condors. After lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge, we beat feet for home, being stormed on pretty much the entire way, so we didn't stop except the minimal amount required to eat, get gas, stay awake, or nap.

Day 6 Grand Canyon, Flowers, and Snow : On Thursday, Day 6, we crawled from our toasty sleeping bags into freezing air. It hailed a bit at breakfast. A 40% chance of thundershowers was predicted. After a futile foray to try to find another battery for my camera, we strolled to the shuttle stop in the hail/snow and started our tour of the rim. Delightfully, the sun came out and we strolled the rim trail in pleasant weather. But by lunchtime, freezing winds and hail/snow had driven everyone back into the shuttle buses. With white-out conditions in the canyon, we bought a hot lunch indoors and then went to Tusayan to watch the IMAX Grand Canyon film.

Day 4 Supai; Navajo, Havasu, and Mooney Falls; wildlife and flowers : On day 4, I got up early and roamed around the village of Supai with my camera. After a light breakfast (granola bars), we continued hiking another 2 miles or so down the canyon in search of Havasu Falls and its sister falls, Navajo and Mooney. It was hot.

Day 5 Hualapai Hilltop, Seligman, and Grand Canyon : On Day 5, we rose before 5 a.m. and headed back up the 8 miles of trail and 2000 feet to Hualapai Hilltop. I was determined to get there before it got hot, so the camera got put away, and I took no photos till we got to the top and started celebrating. Then drove to Grand Canyon South Rim, set up camp, watched the sunset, and got very cold very quickly. It was near freezing and it hailed around dinnertime.

Day 3 Hike from Hualapai Hilltop to Supai : We left Seligman around 6:30, arrived at Hualapai Hilltop around 8:30, and started our descent. Arrived in the village of Supai midafternoon and kicked back in the heat. Lots of rocks and cliffs and sky and trail photos, plus flowers, dogs, horses, mules and even antelope.

Day 2A Calico Ghost Town : (#7 on the map.) My chosen goal for our first night's sleep was the campground at Calico Ghost Town, just outside Barstow, so that, in the morning, we could tour the town. It has been considerably restored and touristized, but still an interesting place to browse around.

Day 1B San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery May 2008 : (#3 on the map.) I've often passed the sign pointing up route 33 towards Santa Nella and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. But this is not an important stop for motivation on the way to dog agility events. This time I wanted to see it. Turns out that it's in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, which is very way out in the middle of nowhere. It's quite peaceful. Just the place to put an expansive lawn and reflecting pools: the middle of a semidesert. But at least it's near a reservoir.

Day 1A Romero Visitor Center San Luis Reservoir : (#2 on the map.) My theme the first two days was "We've got plenty of time!" I intended to stop at every intriguing place that I usually whip by on my way to dog agility events. First up, an hour into the trip: Romero Visitor Center at the San Luis Reservoir, which is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide and very hard to miss as you skirt its shores along highway 152.

Day 1C Los Banos Park and Museum, Sunset : (#4 on the map.) It's nearly 2:00 in the afternoon now, and technically we're still only an hour from home, so we still have 6 hours of driving to do today. So much for having lots of time! Still, we decide to take the more interesting 99 south instead of the barren I-5, which means cutting across on 152 through Los Baños.
