elf1  > Nature > Sierra Azul Wildflower Survey April 2008
Wildflower identification in Sierra Azul with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Many photos blurry, sorry, not checking shutter speed and it was too slow too often. Photos are copyright Ellen Finch. You may use on your personal web site or for nonprofit if you give me credit and link back here. All others contact me.

elf1 > Here's the problem with going through grassy, scrubby areas. Ticks everywhere. Assured by the biologist that "it takes 24 hours for them to dig in, so you've got plenty of time to get rid of them," we forged on, brushing them off ourselves and each other constantly. This one is maybe an eighth of an inch across including legs. And they hunker down when you try to brush them away.
elf1 > We're approaching the slide.
elf1 > Morning glory.
elf1 > The last member of our group finishes crossing the slide area. This was a hands-and-feet precarious crossing. You can see how steep it is down to the left. You can also see that he managed to hang onto our precious flower identification charts. Good man!
elf1 > Deer lotus aka deer weed aka Lotus scoparius.
elf1 > Butterfly. I'm thinking checkerspot of some sort (probably Chaldecon Checkerspot--thanks, Seph). They're even worse than little white flowers! This one was resting up and having a cigarette after what looked like a brisk frolic in the hay with another checkerspot of the same sort. Apparently THEY can tell the difference.
elf1 > Looking across and down the canyon we came up.
elf1 > Morning glory buds, looking elegant.
elf1 > Blue witch. Fuzzy. Sorry.
