The Los Trancos Open Space Preserve includes a 1.5-mile trail that shows short-term and long-term effects of two tectonic plates sliding past each other--the Pacific Plate and the American plate sliding along the San Andreas fault. elf1 > All that moss and lichen.

elf1 > And, off to the side, an old decaying wagon axle and wheel.

elf1 > More of the same kind of moss I saw in abundance yesterday at Teague Hill.

elf1 > (Station 6.) Here again, you can see the trail running along the fault bench. Posts all along the trail show the line of the actual fault or a subsidiary fault.

elf1 > (Station 6.) The sag pond (here mostly dried up) is another sign of fault activity. The plates grinding against each other make very fine particles, a kind of clay, which forms an underground dam, preventing water from draining from the area. Dad is standing on a rare pressure ridge, looking at the pond.

elf1 > (Station 7.) Possible sign of the 1906 quake right along the fault line. This tree may have fallen over but retained enough roots in the ground for the branches to keep growing up. (Coring samples prove that the dates make this a likely scenario.)

elf1 > Man, another fallen tree in our path, forcing us to go cross-country. Didn't I just do this yesterday?
